Onset Fire Department firefighters blaze through driver training course

Jun 16, 2017

Onset Fire Department's driver training program is about to graduate eight members of the department, each fully equipped to operate the station’s vehicles.

The 60-hour course took about two months, Onset Fire Department Captain Jeffrey Dias said. Usually, the fire department attends driver training programs in other fire stations, but this was the first time they ran the training at the Onset Fire Department.

Those in the program learned vehicle operations, pumping operations and apparatus positioning. Though members of the fire department typically learn to be a driver on an individual basis, this year there were many people who were ready to become drivers, so this class was implemented.

The firefighters also recently completed the Massachusetts Fire Academy's advanced emergency vehicle operator course, which included an obstacle course and education on braking systems, defensive driving attitudes and apparatus awareness.
