Onset innkeeper helps the American Lung Association... with yoga
If you're going to complete a 105-mile bike ride to raise money for the American Lung Association, you're going to need to be flexible.
Years-long yoga instructor Cheryl Bagangan knows this. She'll be completing that bike ride — the association's Escape to the Cape Bike Trek — from Sandwich to Provincetown with her husband, Abe, in September.
And because the couple is working to raise $1,000 for the American Lung Association, Bagangan decided to combine her love for yoga, her cycling training exercises, and her fundraising effort into one: Yoga for a Cause, held Wednesdays at 7 a.m. on Onset Beach.
Bagangan, who runs the Inn on Onset Bay across the street from the beach, will offer the hour-long class free of charge — both because she loves teaching and because yoga helps her cycling training.
"If you're doing strength training, you need to build your flexibility as well," Bagangan noted.
Though the classes are free, attendees are welcome to drop a donation in Bagangan's jar to raise money for the American Lung Association.
"Whatever I get, I'll just be so grateful," she said.
Yoga will be held rain or shine. If the weather is soggy, class will be held inside a studio at the inn.
Bagangan and Abe recently began cycling regularly. The exercise is helpful for Abe, whose health issues prevent him from walking or running.
"But his doctor said he can ride to China," Bagangan said with a smile. "It's a passion we rediscovered," she added, noting that she and Abe used to ride with their children, who are now grown.
"We loved [cycling] so much, we were looking for a long ride," Bagangan explained. I thought, 'Wouldn't it be great if we did it for a cause?'"
Bagangan chose the American Lung Association as that cause because she has friends who suffer from asthma and COPD, a disease that affects the lungs and makes it difficult for sufferers to breathe.
And, she noted: "If you're a cyclist, air quality is so important."
Armed with her new Trek bicycle from Wareham's Tri-town Bicycles, Bagangan and her husband have begun training for the big ride with rides down the Cape Cod Canal and from Great Neck to Little Harbor. She added that she is thankful for the team at Tri-town, who helped her pick out a bike for her needs.
The couple is on track to raise the $1,000, and Bagangan said the pair will keep fundraising until the September 28 event.
Stop by Onset Beach across from the Inn on Onset Bay on Wednesdays at 7 a.m. for yoga. Classes will run until September 26. If yoga isn't your thing, but you'd like to help, donations can also be dropped inside the inn's office or made online by clicking here.
