Joshua Macro, 24, of Onset was on his way home from the Fan Club on Cranberry Highway early Saturday morning when he was struck and killed by a vehicle operated 28-year-old John Vandeusen.

Macro, who was in a wheelchair, had been at the Fan Club playing pool with a group of friends Friday night prior to the accident, confirmed Glenn Justice, the owner/manager at the popular local hangout who said he was there Friday night.

“It’s sad,” said Justice, who said he did not know Macro well but that he frequented the establishment and had seen him in there many times before. “He was in here a bunch playing pool and watching the (NBA) basketball games. I didn’t know him, but I remember him.”

Justice said that Macro and his friends usually kept to themselves when at the Fan Club.

“Him and his friends, they always sort of stuck together,” said Justice, adding that the Fan Club is a popular spot for people in wheelchairs because its wide open and accessible, including the areas where there are pool tables.

A man at the Onset apartment where Macro lived declined to comment about the accident.

“It’s kind of shocking,” Mike Ellis, a friend of Macro’s, told WHDH Channel 7 News Saturday. “You know, it’s definitely a shame. He was a good kid. It’s a shame to see what happened.”

According to Wareham police, Vandeusen was charged with motor vehicle homicide, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and failure to stay in marked lanes. He will be arraigned Tuesday morning at Wareham District Court.

It is unclear where exactly Macro was at the time of the accident, but reports say he was traveling in the bicycle lane along Onset Avenue near Aunt Hannah’s Lane when he was struck by the vehicle, which ended up in a wooded area along the road.

The case is currently under investigation by the Wareham Police Department, the Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office, and the Accident Reconstruction Team.
