Pat Matthews, a Barnstable County Sheriff's Deputy who lives in Onset, was named Correctional Officer of the Year at a ceremony held at the State House on Nov. 19.

Matthews, who has been with the Barnstable Sheriff's Office for 13 years, is known for his calm and compassionate approach to his work, according to Barnstable Sheriff Donna Buckley.

Described as a “peaceful warrior,” Matthews assists incarcerated individuals through the Medications for Opioid Use Disorder program. He also teaches jiu-jitsu and volunteers with the Special Olympics law enforcement torch run, carrying the “Flame of Hope” as part of the event.

The Massachusetts Sheriffs’ Association supports and advocates for the 14 Sheriffs’ Offices across the state. The association's Law Enforcement & Corrections Award Ceremony on Nov. 19, recognized staff from across the state for their work in 10 different categories.

The ceremony also awarded three other Barnstable department staff members.

“I’m so proud of the work we do at the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office,” Buckley said. “These jobs are often done in isolation, but that does not make them any less important. Staff members here help incarcerated individuals transform their lives. Congratulations to my staff and all those who were recognized today.”
