Onset welcomes new potter

Jul 7, 2010

West Wareham resident Christina Kunze is putting a spin on things in Onset, with Eye of the Goddess, her new pottery shop and studio.

"It's going to be a lot of fun," said Kunze, who has been making pottery for more than a decade. The name of her shop comes from her passion for art history, which she studied in Turkey.

Kunze said she has always wanted to open up her own space, and the Onset Village storefront, next to Marc Anthony's Pizzeria, seemed like the perfect fit.

"I have a place where I can learn," Kunze said. "I have a place where I can sell my stuff."

Kunze, a middle school art teacher in Bridgewater, will open the studio to lessons in ceramics, using hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques. Students can learn to make bowls, cups, plaques, sculptures, and more.

"It's addicting," Kunze warned. "You open up the kiln and you have a surprise." The surprise can be good or bad, as sometimes there is breakage after firing clay, she said. But it's always a learning experience.

Kunze makes her own glazes, which are used to strengthen and decorate pottery during firing. All of her glazes will be food-safe, she said. "This stuff will last for thousands of years."

Six-week summer classes begin July 12. They cost $120 plus $30 for materials for teens and children, and $180 plus $40 for materials for adults.

Kunze will also offer private lessons and host birthday parties.
