Orchestrating a night to remember with the spring concert
Event Date:
As people walk past the music department in Wareham High School, they may get a chance to hear the various sounds of students rehearsing. Whether it be pianos, trumpets or voices — music is a constant as the days leading up to the spring concert dwindle.
Music director Jason Roth has been preparing his students for a culmination of all the work that has been done since the start of the school year.
Roth will take a backseat during this performance as the various ensembles will be led by the students in them.
"We have students hosting the show, planning the show, in charge of moving objects in the back and introducing each show," Roth said. "It's really cool to see the autonomy and just how much each student is involved in our program."
This year the theme will be “fairy garden” with help from the art club and collaboration with Wareham Media to make it come to life. Students will be dressed up in their finest outfits and jewelry to present audiences with a variety of songs.
"It's a time to express themselves visually on top of what they're doing musically," he said. "So we try to enhance that with the theme."
Seniors will get special showcases and solos during the concert to honor their time with the music department and will be wearing yellow and pink.
Hart Andrade — a senior in concert choir, concert band, jazz band and jazz workshop will be emceeing the concert and transitioning songs. Hart said he and his peers have everything under control in time for the show.
"I've watched the previous people who did it last year and then with my experience talking on announcements I was just working my way toward it," Hart said. "I tried to be a good section leader this year and as soon as that Google form went up I turned it in."
Although everything is coming together, Hart said he is feeling the weight of all the end of the school year brings.
"With graduation coming up, it's kind of stressful," he said.
Senior Bean Andrade-Rose is in the concert choir and concert band and predicts the end of the concert will be very emotional..
"There's definitely going to be a lot of tears [and]here's going to be a lot of good music showing how much we've improved over the past few years," Bean said. "The fact that this is my last concert — being able to dress up and stand out and play music one last time as a senior is cool."
Roth said the autonomy of his students like Hart and Bean means a lot to him going into the spring concert. Each day the students practice from bell to bell and come in after school to practice in preparation.
"To see the concert organically function without me controlling every little detail is always very special for me," Roth said.
The spring concert will be held in the Wareham High School auditorium Thursday, May 22 at 6 p.m.
