Our Library at Work

Nov 21, 2011

The last time you picked up books at the Wareham Free Library, it probably didn’t occur to you that in Fiscal Year 2011 alone the WFL circulated 142,098 books and materials to other patrons just like you. Not to mention, that was an increase of 5.7% from the previous year.

When you last attended a book fair or signed up your child for youth soccer at a WFL meeting room, it probably didn’t cross your mind that the multiple meeting rooms in the library have hosted over 500 other community events in FY 2011 as well.

Between borrowing materials, attending childrens’ story time, using the computers, learning chess, and enjoying the many other services that patrons have come to rely on, it is easy to overlook just how much the Library serves our community overall.

For a broader perspective, consider this excerpt from the Library Director’s Annual Report.

In FY 2011, the library had 17,069 current active registered borrowers. The library was open 2,082 hours. There were nineteen public use Internet computers in the library. 420 patrons used these computers during a typical week

The children’s services section provided 132 programs. Total attendance at these programs was 2,149. The library hosted a summer reading program, “One World, Many Stories.” 111 people participated in the library’s first online reading program for all ages.

Nineteen adult programs were held, including a Love Your Library Rally in February 2011.

As we look beyond 2011, the services at the WFL will be guided by a new Strategic Plan that will take us to 2017. The Plan was developed with the input of community stakeholders, Library Trustees, and Library Staff.
