Pawning returns to Main Street, for now

Aug 12, 2015

Pawning will return to Main Street, but it might not be for long.

Selectmen voted unanimously Tuesday to reinstate the pawnbroker's license for Gateway Gold and Pawn at 294 Main St.

Selectmen said, however, after the license expires on Dec. 31, 2015, they would like to see a new location for the pawn shop.

"I would approve it now, but not for next year," Selectman Peter Teitelbaum said.

Teitelbaum suggested that the business might be moved to Cranberry Highway, or another highly commercialized location, as opposed to Main Street.

"I don't have a problem with the nature of the business, just the location," he said.

The license also came with two stipulations from Selectmen: that Gateway Gold and Pawn follow the regulations in the town sign bylaw; and that there be no items for sale or otherwise placed outside the building.

Gateway Gold and Pawn building owner Dominic Cammarano originally came before Selectmen on July 15 to renew his pawnbroker's license, but Selectmen found numerous errors with his paperwork that needed to be fixed before a license was given.

Cammarano said he thought he would be given more time to seek a new location, but that he'll "do his best" to accommodate the Selectmen's wishes.
