Pedestrian killed while crossing Cranberry Highway identified
A 58-year-old Wareham man was killed Thursday, October 13, after he was struck by an SUV while walking across Cranberry Highway in East Wareham.
The accident happened at roughly 7:30 p.m. Wareham Police said the victim, who was walking alone, was apparently trying to cross from Cape Cod Gas to the trailer park on the other side of the four-lane highway.
The man, identified as John McPeck by police, was hit by 41-year-old Sean Cunniff of Plymouth who was traveling northbound in a 1996 Jeep Laredo. Though the investigation of the accident continues, Cunniff was not cited for his involvement, according to police.
When police arrived, they performed CPR on the victim until Onset Fire and Wareham EMS arrived. The man was transported to Tobey Hospital where he was pronounced dead by medical staff, police said.
One lane of Cranberry Highway was shut down Thursday evening during the police investigation.
Thursday's incident was the second accident on Cranberry Highway in less than three months in which a pedestrian was killed. On July 19, 53-year-old Charles Raymond, who lived on Cranberry Highway, was struck and killed when he attempted to cross the highway near the Jefferson Shores neighborhood. That accident also occurred in the evening hours at roughly 8:30 p.m.
