Costumed readers entertained runners and walkers who participated in Wareham Middle School's Readers Become Leaders 5K on Sunday.

The Readers Become Leaders program helps purchase materials, supplies, and some of the Wareham Middle School's books and novels.

"We had such a great day for the race and had so much fun," said Bethany Chandler, a teacher and one of the organizers of the race. It was "all for a great cause: health and wellness and raising money ... for materials."

The race began on Minot Avenue, headed to Great Neck Road and Stillman Drive, and ended at Minot Forest Elementary.

The top male and female runners took home bragging rights and a $100 prize. They were 45-year-old Anne Preisig, who finished with a time of 20:24, and 36-year-old Keith Putnam, who finished in 19:51.

There was no shortage of younger participants in the race.

Eight-year-old Bianca Greco finished first in the 14-and-under age category with a time of 26:57. Alex Moulding, 12, was the first-place male in the 14-and-under category with a time of 26:48. Emily Bacchiocchi, 16, finished in 31:23.
