A fog delay and an injured MVP didn’t stop the Gatemen from earning a Cape Cod Baseball League Championship title on Monday afternoon. The Gatemen defeated the Chatham Anglers 9-3 at Veterans Field, securing their first title since 2012.

The game, which was suspended on Sunday night due to heavy fog, resumed in the bottom of the sixth inning with the Gatemen leading 4-1.

Coach Don Sneddon said the hits kept coming despite the pause.

“It was a team thing,” he said. “It spread around the whole lineup. They just produced and produced and produced and just when you thought they were done, they put in another hit.”

Sneddon praised series’ MVP Austin Shenton, a third baseman and junior at Florida International University. Shenton was questionable on Monday after getting hit in his throwing tricep during batting practice.

“We had come back from the fog and he was iced down and my heart sunk,” said Sneddon. “He’s the heart and soul of this team.”

The injury wasn’t bad and Shenton took the field, helping to power the Gatemen toward the win.

“That’s the last guy they wanted up and he’s the one guy we wanted up,” said Sneddon.

Shenton’s bat was on fire during the regular season when he hit four home runs, nine doubles and batted .349. During the playoffs, his batting average was over .500.

Sneddon said he’ll be watching Shenton closely in the coming years.

“I’m anxious to see what else he does,” said Sneddon.

With a Cape Cod Baseball League Championship title, MVP honors and a respectable batting average, Shenton said he hadn’t considered accomplishing so much this summer.

“When I was on the plane I wrote down a few goals, but I never envisioned this,” said Shenton.

Shenton credited Sneddon for fostering an atmosphere on the team that brought the players together the summer.

“You come down introduce yourself and you become part of the family,” said Shenton. “Don and others have brought in a great group of guys…We all meshed well together. I think that matters.”
