Halloween got an early start in Wareham this weekend as kids got a chance to play games, paint pumpkins and most importantly, eat some candy all over town.

The festivities began Friday night when superheroes, princesses, exotic animals and spooky characters descended on the Gleason Family YMCA.

Inside the building, there were games in every corner of the gym as well as a big moon bounce castle. Outside was a spooky walk in the dark through the forest for some of the older kids in attendance.

"We're really focusing on the family as a unit. There's something for everyone," said Lu Britto, senior program director at the YMCA, who was dressed up as Tony Stark, also known as the superhero "Iron Man."

There were plenty of sweets available for kids inside the YMCA as well as face painting and arts and crafts tables.

On Saturday afternoon the Onset Bay Association held activities for kids on the other side of town. Starting at noon with arts and crafts at the Onset bandshell, kids then had a number of activities to choose from on Onset Avenue.

The Firehouse Cafe provided free cupcakes, while farther down the street, Milly Burrows (a.k.a Mrs. Zelda) told spooky stories inside the Pier View restaurant.

The event concluded when kids paraded from the Onset Bay Association offices down Onset Avenue to Conway on the Bay by Stonebridge.

"The kids seem to have so much fun," said Eleanor Martin, president of the OBA.

Anyone who missed out on the festivities this weekend need not worry. On Oct. 31, there will be trick-or-treating on Main Street in Wareham starting at 3 p.m. and the annual Trunk-or-Treat event at Lopes Field at 6 p.m.
