Painters were encouraged to leave their studios today and paint at the beach, capturing local scenery before an upcoming art raffle that will raise money to preserve the landscape.

Charlene Mackiewicz, an acrylic and watercolor painter, hosted Plein Air Days Monday and Tuesday, inviting artists to visit Pinehurst Beach and be inspired by the fresh air and scenery.

Mackiewicz, a member of the Pinehurst Beach Improvement Association, held the outdoor painting days as a way to raise money for the association, which is currently trying to improve the beach’s sea wall. The sea wall is eroded and leaning heavily, Mackiewicz said.

An art exhibit, sale and raffle will be held Sept. 9 at 7:30 p.m., promoting local artists and raising money for the sea wall improvement. Mackiewicz said she hopes to have at least 10 artists donate 5-by-7 paintings, which will be raffled. Raffle tickets can be purchased at one for $2, three for $5 and 10 for $10. Artists can donate paintings for the raffle through Sept. 5. The works will be judged and awarded cash prizes.

Some of the paintings available at the raffle will be ones created at Plein Air Days and most will be scenes of Wareham.

“It’s a nice opportunity for people to come down to the area and paint something of interest to other people in town,” Mackiewicz said.

Barbara Healy of Dartmouth came by the beach Monday to paint Broad Marsh Cove. Healy has been painting for many years and will be donating several paintings for the raffle.

Mackiewicz hopes the raffle will revive support for the arts as well as for beautifying Pinehurst Beach.
