Poker and paddling a hit in Onset
Perfecting a poker face wasn't necessary at Onset's Kayak Poker Run on Saturday — unless players were concerned about the fish calling their bluff.
Around 25 kayakers participated in a marine poker game that had them paddling from Shell Point through Sunset Cove, out to Wickets Island, to the Onset Pier, and back to Shell Point during the Onset Bay Association's annual fundraiser.
"It's a great day and we should have a lot of fun," organizer — and, as some called him, "kayak master" — Patrick Marshall told the participants who gathered at Shell Point for the game.
Prizes for the best hand, among other categories, were doled out at the end of the paddle.
Marshall warned the participants not to cheat or trade cards among their fellow kayakers.
"I have various weaponry this year," he said, holding up a plastic water gun.
Participant John Nyman likely wished he wasn't threatened with that water gun, as his hand took a turn for the worst after his stop at Wickets Island.
"I started with two kings!" he yelled from the water as he paddled by the Onset Pier, disappointed and unenthused about the third card he was dealt.
And he wasn't the only one having trouble. A line to swap cards at the end of the event — which cost $1 per card — stretched down the beach.
All in all, the event was a success, said Onset Bay Association President Eleanor Martin. It brought in approximately $400 for the OBA.
"We appreciate everybody who came and participated," Martin said. "We look forward to building a bigger event next year!"
Martin thanked Marshall for once again organizing the event, as well as Onset resident Len Gay for keeping an eye on the kayakers from his motor boat.
