Police arrest Middleborough teen after traffic stop yields painkillers

Wareham Police arrested a 19-year-old Middleborough man just after 2 a.m. on Tuesday when a traffic stop led to the discovery of 92 pain pills and marijuana.

Officer George Chandler, assisted by Officer Kevin Reilly, conducted a vehicle stop on Cranberry Highway near Mayflower Liquors after noticing a vehicle operating with defective equipment, according to police.

During the stop, the officers noticed that the driver of the vehicle, later identified as Andrew Cavanaugh of 83 Miller Street in Middleborough, acted suspiciously and "made furtive movements," according to a police statement.

The officers then discovered marijuana paraphernalia, and a further search yielded marijuana and a plastic bag containing 92 Oxycodone Hydrochloride pills, police said.

Miller was arrested with out incident and arraigned in Wareham District Court for the possession of a "Class B" substance with the intent to distribute, police said. Cavanaugh was also issued a bylaw citation for possession of less than an ounce of marijuana, and defective motor vehicle equipment.

In the police statement, Chief Richard Stanley "praised the alertness of the officers in this case, which resulted in the removal of a large amount of prescription drugs that could have potentially reached the streets of Wareham at some point in time."
