Police crack down on crime with Operation Safe Streets
In response to an uptick in violence and criminal activity over the past few months, Wareham Police participated in an effort to take criminals off the streets this past weekend, called Operation Safe Streets. The department, assisted by State Police and other agencies, arrested 48 individuals on various charges and wrote 277 citations for motor vehicle offenses.
"We will not allow the criminal element to rule this town," Interim Police Chief Richard Stanley said in a statement.
The operation began at 4 p.m. Friday and ended at midnight Sunday morning. Police saturated all areas of town and focused on neighborhood patrols, warrant arrests, parole and probation follow-up investigations, and "aggressive zero-tolerance traffic enforcement," according to a Wareham Police press release.
Most of the arrests were due to default warrants for individuals who failed to appear in court for offenses such as misdemeanors to motor vehicle offenses to serious felonies, according to the press release.
One male was arrested for failure to register as a sex offender and for outstanding warrants for assaults with dangerous weapons, drug charges, and others, the press release indicated. Police also arrested two individuals for operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol.
Three K9 units participated in the operation, and at times, up to 20 personnel were assigned to an eight-hour shift during the 32-hour period that Operation Safe Streets was in effect, the press release indicated.
"I think [Operation Safe Streets] shows not only our tenacity, but the high level of
professionalism that [Chief Stanley] brings," Town Administrator Mark Andrews said of the effort.
The operation was headed by Wareham Police Operations Division Commander Lt. Kevin Walsh, according to the press release. In addition to State Police officers, the joint effort included the State Police Community Action Team (CAT) and the Violent Fugitive Apprehension Team, the Plymouth County Sheriffs, probation officers, the Massachusetts Parole Board, and the Barnstable County Sheriffs Department.
Stanley praised the efforts of Walsh, the patrol officers, and detectives, and thanked all of the agencies that participated in the operation, according to the press release. Stanley and the department plan to continue enforcement efforts like Operation Safe Streets.
Stanley concluded his statement with a message to law-breakers: “Wareham is no place for you to hang around," he said. "It is time to leave”.
