Police identify swimmers rescued at Shell Point

Two people were injured just after 3:30 p.m. on Friday, July 19, during a near drowning at Shell Point beach in Onset.

According to emergency broadcast reports, a swimmer nearly drowned and was rescued from the water and taken to Tobey Hospital. First-responders sought a medical helicopter for the victim, later identified as 29-year-old Ian Reid of Roslindale. Reid was taken to Rhode Island Hospital.

A civilian rescuer, identified by police as Terence Lallo, 36, of Dorchester, was also injured.

The Wareham Harbormaster Department, Wareham Police, Wareham EMS, and Onset Fire responded to the scene.

Almost immediately after the incident, first-responders were called to Swifts Beach for reports of a person in distress in the water. That person reportedly returned to shore safely.

The near drowning was the second in Onset in nearly as many weeks. Dennis Maxim, 51, of Wareham, was rescued from Muddy Cove on July 8.
