Powder Puff game brings out the girls

Nov 21, 2012

It wasn't so much blood sweat and tears, as it was cheers, silly string, and fundraising.

The Senior/Sophomore Purple Cobras faced off against the Junior/Freshman Swag in Wareham High School’s annual Powder Puff football game on Nov. 20.

The juniors and freshman walked away with the victory.

The Vikings football team coached the girls during the game, and some members of the team donned spandex shorts and lime green shirts and cheered from the sidelines.

While it was a flag football game and tackling was not allowed, the girls played so aggressively, it seemed like they wanted it to be a full contact game.

“They do it every year, it’s a tradition,” said Wareham High School librarian Judi Debonise.

The game is organized by the seniors and raises money for all the students. The seniors did a bake sale, while the junior/freshman team sold buttons and pins.

On the sideline, the boys brought their A game to their cheerleading job. They made valiant attempts at human pyramids, all of which inevitably ended in piles of humans.

There was a silly string attack just a couple minutes into the game, which drew some loud protest from the cheerleaders, who wanted to make sure the field was ready to go for the annual Thanksgiving game against Bourne.

The half time show featured the boys dancing and doing some very light tumbling moves. For a group of football players, the choreography wasn't bad.

After a great season that saw the Vikings come within sneezing distance of a spot in the playoffs, the Powder Puff game wasn’t exactly a nail biter, but it was a great time!
