Pro wrestlers throw down in Onset

Body slams, high-flying elbow drops and plenty of trash talk could be found in Onset on Friday when Top Rope Promotions hosted a professional wrestling show.

Organized by lifelong Wareham resident Roger Chouinard, he said the event was set up to bring out families for a fun evening.

“I remember when there was so much going on in this town for kids. There were carnivals, fairs – the circus used to come –but now it seems like there’s not much,” he said. “I wanted to get some of that excitement back, and this is a great way to do that.”

Last year, Chouinard co-chaired a similar event that doubled as a fundraiser for the Wareham Boys & Girls Club. This year, he said the focus was bring families out on a summer night to watch the wrestlers knock each other around the ring.

Held at the Dudley Brown VFW, the event featured an appearance from Teddy Long, a longtime manager and referee with World Wrestling Entertainment, which broadcasts shows nationally.

“I’m hoping to bring more events like this to Wareham and Onset in the future, said Chouinard. “Everybody had a great time.”
