Program to present the history of Main Street
Representatives from the Wareham Village Association will present their program "Early Days in Narrows Village" to the Wareham Historical Society on Monday, May 18.
The program will review the histories, local color, and old photos of many of the homes and businesses along Main Street. It will cover a time when farmers and mill men pulled their wood logs, bog iron and stone with oxen along the river banks and with horses over roads hardened by oyster shells.
The town at one time was a small seaport town which suffered through many hardships to become a progressive and self-sufficient town. It weathered fires, blizzards and hurricanes. New businesses were established, homes were rebuilt and the town flourished and became a popular tourist seaside town and a town known for its beauty and many industries.
This program was a part of the Summer of Celebration in Wareham Town Hall last summer. The program will begin at 7 p.m. at the Old Methodist Meeting House, 495 Main St. Admission is free to members and a $2.00 donation from non-members.
