Public review for community electricity aggregation program

Dec 19, 2024

Revisions to the community electricity aggregation program have been made and there is a public review period for these revisions being held until Jan. 18.

Currently, over 8,000 Wareham residences and businesses are a part of the community electricity aggregation program which allows the town to purchase energy in bulk for its residents and businesses, giving it negotiating power with energy suppliers over cost, rate stability and renewable energy supplies. The electricity aggregation plan outlines how the town receives its electricity supply before it is distributed.

The plan was put into place in 2017 after approval from the Department of Public Utilities, which recently passed new guidelines to give municipalities more local authority over the plan and to increase transparency about the plan with the public.

Previously, towns needed to contact the Department of Public Utilities to have any changes to the plan approved but under the new revised version, municipalities no longer need the department’s approval.

The second revision makes it so municipalities must provide the public with any new information on how the program is being implemented on the program's website.

The revised plan will not impact the town's current electricity supply options and prices, which are fixed until November 2025. No action is required by existing participants to continue receiving the current pricing.
