Public safety officials spend a "Night Out" with the community

Public safety officials aren't known for hanging around moonwalks, jammin' to the latest pop music, and playing pick-up basketball games with kids from the neighborhood.

But all that and more was available to see at the third annual National Night Out in Onset on Tuesday, coordinated by the Wareham Police Department and Target in Wareham Crossing.

"This is a chance for the public to interact with the public safety officials," said Wareham Police Chief Richard Stanley. "I want people in town to know police officers by their name," he later added.

The event kicked off  at Onset Pier with a parade of fire trucks, ATVs, police cars, a Harbormaster boat, and other public safety vehicles.

The vehicles then turned into Lopes Field where they were met with free hot dogs, a water slide, moonwalks, and face painting from the employees at Target.

"I came here the last two years, and I know it's fun. It's an inexpensive family night," Kristy McMahon said while her daughter munched on a hot dog.

"The police department, public safety officials, they're [out] there," she added. "But this kind of makes them more visible."

Some visitors strung themselves behind a long line of police tape as they watched the human and canine members of the Wareham Police K-9 Unit show off their skills.

The Onset Fire Department then lit a large stack of wood on fire and broke out the fire hoses to put it out.

The sun began to set on the Night Out as a "cops versus kids" basketball game was called out over the loudspeakers.

"This is really the start of a tradition," said Stanley. "Our goal is to double this every year."
