Raymond L. Matthews, Sr., 92, of Plymouth, died Jan. 14, 2020 in Plymouth Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. He was the son of the late Benjamin and Marion (Barrows) Matthews.

He was born in Waterbury, CT and lived in Wareham, Plympton, and Scituate for many years before moving to Plymouth. He was a World War II Army Veteran.

Mr. Matthews graduated from Boston University with a Master’s Degree in Education. 

He worked as a Reading Specialist and Teacher in Town of Bourne for several years.  After retiring, he worked at Scituate High School teaching English as a Second Language. 

Survivors include his children, Patricia Matthews of Brookline, Rae Louise Olson of Halifax, Marion Matthews of Plymouth, Raymond Matthews, Jr. of Pawtucket, RI, Nathan Matthews of Bourne and Kyle Matthews of Fairhaven; his sister, Harriet Matthews Mendes of New Bedford; a brother, Kenneth Matthews of Wareham; 17 grandchildren; many great grandchildren. He was the father of the late Linda B. Jacobs-Nolan and Douglas Matthews. He was the brother of the late John Barrows, George Barrows, Alben Barrows, Mary (Barrows) Dias, William Matthews and Carlton Matthews.

Visiting hours are from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, January 19, 2020 at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Hwy., Wareham.

His funeral will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, January 20, 2020 from the funeral home followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. in St. Patrick’s Church, 82 High St., Wareham. Burial will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Wareham.
