Red Brook Family Day and Movie Night on September 23

Sep 11, 2012

A free Red Brook Family Day and Movie Night will be held at the Lyman Reserve from 3 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, September 23.

Visitors are encouraged to explore the 4.5 mile Red Brook River, which is located at the boundary of Wareham and Bourne, with hands on activities during the Family Day.

Find out what projects are underway at local and regional environmental organizations. At dusk, settle in to watch "A Brook Through Time," a story about the Lyman family.

Bring a picnic basket and a blanket and enjoy the fun!

Red Brook is home to one of the last remaining native sea-run brook trout fisheries in the eastern United States, according to the Lyman Reserve's website.

The Theodore Lyman Reserve honors the naturalist who, in 1867, first experienced Red Brook during a site visit for the Massachusetts Board of Inland Fisheries, according to the website.

He eventually acquired a total of 638 acres, and in 2001, the Lyman family generously donated the entire Red Brook property to ensure its protection in perpetuity.

Lyman’s legacy is preserved in the form of the 638-acre Red Brook Reserve, which is comprised of the 210-acre Lyman Reserve, and the 428-acre Red Brook Wildlife Management Area.

The Lyman Reserve is spread out over Wareham, Bourne, and Plymouth.
