Rehoboth-Dighton Falcons soar over Vikings, 21-0

Oct 16, 2010

On a brilliant autumn afternoon made for football, Rehoboth-Dighton High School football came to town and used their strong running game and mistake-free style to hand the Wareham Vikings their fourth straight loss, 21-0.  As with many games during this frustrating season, the result turned on untimely Viking mistakes.

Wareham took the opening kickoff and moved methodically down the field to the one yard line.  Strong running by senior Matt Pimental and sophomores Darien Fernandes (returning from an injured ankle) and Charles Tranfaglia pounded the Falcons in what appeared was to be a quick score.  But on fourth-and-one-yard-to-go for the go-ahead score, the handoff from quarterback to running back was mishandled, and the Vikings were forced to turn the ball over to the Falcons on the four yard line.

Wareham's defense had a chance to stop Rehoboth-Dighton deep in Falcon territory and gain excellent field position for their next drive.   But on the second play from scrimmage, Falcon senior Adam Benvi burst around his left side and broke three Viking tackles to score on a 91-yard dash to put the Falcons up 7-0.

Neither offense could move the ball effectively for most of the remainder of the first half.  But with less than one minute remaining before halftime, Falcon running back Brian Rocha dashed down his left side in what appeared to be a touchdown, but the ball was ruled out of bounds at the one-yard line after Rocha knocked down the referee at the goal-line!  Rocha made sure when he got the ball back on the next play and scored with 32 seconds left in the half to make it 13-0.

Wareham opened the second half by containing the Rehoboth-Dighton offense, but the Viking offense was unable to move the ball out of their own side of the field.  At 5:34 in the third quarter, the Falcon running game struck again when senior Brian Bettencourt burst through the Vikings for a 63-yard touchdown run. With a 2-point conversion, the score was 21-0, where it would stay.

"Rehoboth-Dighton is a good, solid team that plays together and doesn't make many mistakes", Wareham Head Coach Dan Nault said after the game.  "I thought we played better than 21-0", he said, referring to the apparent lopsided score, "but we're losing focus at critical points in the game."

The loss drops Wareham's record to 1-5.  Their next opponent is Sandwich High School, at Sandwich, but the game's start time is uncertain due to the weather.  The time will be posted as soon as it is available.
