This year’s Relay for Life starts Friday night, and organizers are gearing up for 14 hours of walking with themed laps and spending time honoring cancer survivors.

Sponsored by the American Cancer Society, the relay is an overnight walk to battle cancer. Participants are split into teams and someone from the team should walk around the track at all times throughout the night, signifying that cancer never sleeps.

Every hour, themed laps are planned to keep people energized, including superhero, glow in the dark and ugly sweater themes.

The Relay for Life takes place in more than 5,200 communities and 27 countries, according to the American Cancer Society.

This is the 15th year of the Relay for Life in Wareham, according to organizer Patricia Hackett. She said 200 to 250 people typically attend the relay.

Hackett’s favorite part of the night is the luminaria event, when white bags are lit around the track in honor of those who have had cancer.

“That’s the part of the event that changed my perspective on life,” Hackett said. “It just reminded me to be grateful for everything."

People can register for the relay on the night of the event. Those not interested in taking part in the full relay can stop by at any time to see what is happening and show support.

“If people want to see a community come together and show support to our loved ones who have been touched by cancer, this is the event to come to,” Hackett said.

A dinner for cancer survivors will be held directly before the relay begins at 5 p.m. on Friday. Local businesses will donate food, Sarah Achorn will be singing and all cancer survivors are welcome to attend.

The Relay for Life, held at the Wareham Middle School track, begins at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 26 and ends at 8 a.m. on Saturday.
