MARION — How does the human body “keep score” of pain, trauma and impactful experiences?

After developing an interest in studying traumatic stress while working with Vietnam war veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Dutch psychiatrist Dr. Bessel van der Kolk had the same question.

Now a leading researcher into post-traumatic stress and the author of the New York Times best-selling book “The Body Keeps the Score,” van der Kolk will join the Marion Institute for a discussion on Thursday, June 27 at Tabor Academy’s Hoyt Hall, 226 Front Street, Marion.

The discussion will center around his book and will cover “how traumatic experiences can disconnect our body and mind, leaving us with a physical imprint of our psychic wounds, and explore the body-oriented treatments proving effective,” according to the Marion Institute.

“Few have had more influence on the understanding of [post-traumatic stress], how it works and how it might be better treated than van der Kolk,” wrote the Marion Institute.

Doors for the event will open at 5:30 p.m. while the discussion begins at 6 p.m. Tickets are $35 to $55 depending on proximity to the stage.
