Mar 5, 2013

Following a bail hearing at Wareham District Court on Tuesday, Eastern Bank robbery suspect Nicholas Liadis was transferred to Bridgewater State Hospital for a 20-day evaluation.

Bridgewater State Hospital is a facility that houses criminally insane individuals, and where the mental state of suspected criminals is evaluated.

The details surrounding the decision to transfer Liadis to Bridgewater were not immediately available.

Liadis, 35, is being held in lieu of $25,000 bail for the Tuesday, Feb. 26, robbery of Eastern Bank on Main Street, and $25,000 for the Nov. 10 robbery of Taunton Federal Credit Union in Middleborough.

Anonymous tipsters helped police track down and lock up Liadis soon after the Eastern Bank robbery.

Wareham Police received two anonymous calls identifying the suspect as the 35-year-old Carver resident, according to reports filed in Wareham District Court.

Police say Liadis entered the Eastern Bank at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 26, and passed a note to a teller that indicated that he was armed and directed the employee to hand over money.

Police compared a Registry of Motor Vehicles photo to the screen shots provided by the bank. They also compared Liadis' image to screen shots of a man involved in robbing Taunton Federal Credit Union in Middleborough on Nov. 10, 2012.

The details of the two robberies, including the language of the note and the description of the suspect were similar, according to court records.

According to court documents, Liadis and the man who robbed the Taunton Federal Credit Union appeared to be the same suspect.

After gathering information from witnesses on Tuesday, Feb. 26, police ascertained that Liadis was working at Cox Corner Pizza in Duxbury. Liadis was placed under arrest at approximately 8 p.m. that day.

Liadis told Duxbury police at the scene that the stolen money was in the trunk of his car.

Wareham Police obtained a warrant to search his car the following morning, and found stolen cash and the clothing and sunglasses police say he wore when he allegedly robbed Eastern Bank.

Wareham Week will update this story as more information becomes available.
