Robbery suspect found incompetent to stand trial

Apr 30, 2014

The man accused of armed robbery at Eastern Bank on Main Street last February and Taunton Federal Credit Union in Middleborough in late 2012 was found incompetent to stand trial at a recent hearing, according to the Plymouth County Superior Court clerk's office.

Nicholas Liadis, 35 was arraigned on two counts of armed robbery in Plymouth County Superior Court almost a year ago on May 2, 2013.

Police arrested Liadis on Feb. 28, 2013, the evening of the Eastern Bank robbery, while he was working at Cox Corner Pizza in Duxbury. Liadis told Duxbury Police that the stolen money was in the trunk of his car, according to court documents.

According to court officials, Liadis entered a guilty plea in superior court this past February, which was rejected by the court because he was found incompetent to enter a plea. He was ruled incompetent to stand trial in March and his case has been continued until March 21, 2016.

According to his attorney, Liadis was evaluated by the Carver Public Schools at age 16, and was found to be operating with the mental capacity of somebody between seven and eight years old.

During a bail hearing in Wareham on March 25, 2013 following a 20-day evaluation at Bridgewater State Hospital,  Liadis' attorney, Matt Walsh, said that his client has an I.Q. below 70 and was "prompted and coached to commit these crimes by a convicted felon."

Liadis was indicted by a grand jury on April 12, 2013 in Superior Court. The proceedings are taking place in Superior Court because Liadis is facing felony charges.

If Liadis is found competent to stand trial, he faces up to ten years in prison — five years for each count of armed robbery.
