Robert E. Andrews, 82

Robert E. Andrews, 82, died Monday, May 26, 2014 at Tobey Hospital in Wareham. He was the husband of Barbara (Araujo) Andrews for 59 years and eight months of marriage.

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Ralph and Alvina (Andrews) Pina, Andrews lived most of his life in Onset. He was a construction supervisor for the Perini Corporation.

Andrews proudly served in the U.S. Army Yankee Division in Japan, Korea, and Okinawa from 1948 to 1952. He was discharged from Ft. Devons in Ayer, MA as a Specialist 2, the youngest at the time, with many combat medals. He was proud and honored to teach the V.F.W. post members the proper way to fold and present the American flag at military funerals and teach them to perform the 21-gun salute at all Wareham and Onset parades. Mr. Andrews was also the driving force in getting veterans and friends to volunteer to build the present V.F.W. post in Onset. He was a life member and past commander of the Dudley L. Brown V.F.W. Post No. 2846, American Legion Wareham Post No. 220 and the Local No. 385 of New Bedford for 60 years.

He is survived by his wife; his siblings, Jacqueline Pires of CA, Lois Patterson and husband Carl of IN, Shirley Douglass Miller of Cataumet, Mary Ann Silva and her husband Jack of Wareham, Emily Viera and her husband Russel of IN Lorraine Gately of Spencer, Bobbie Baptiste of Wareham, Ralph Pina, Jr. of RI, Lester Pina of Onset, John Pina and Jamie Pina both of New Bedford, Michelle Fernandes of Wareham, Paulette Harris of Las Vegas, NV and Terry Lopes of Onset.

Also survived by his sister in-law, Evelyn Cormier of Mashpee, brother in-law, Rome Teixeira of Calif., many nieces and nephews and his good friends, Mickey and Debbie Zine, Lovie and Carol Silva, Linda Hammond and his many friends at the Onset pier.

His funeral will be from the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway (Rt. 28), Wareham on Mon., June 2, at 10:30 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary’s Church, Onset Ave., Onset at 11:30 a.m. Interment will be in Mass. National Cemetery, Bourne. Visiting hours will be Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m..
