Robert B. Osswald, 73, of Onset, died March 2 in Tobey Hospital, Wareham. He was the husband of Theresa A. (Bumpus) Osswald and the son of the late Thomas F. and Lena S. (Lima) Osswald.

He was born in New Bedford and lived in Onset since 1971.  

Mr. Osswald joined the Massachusetts National Guard in 1965. In April of 1968 his unit was ordered to Active Duty at Fort Benning, Georgia. He was a Vietnam War Veteran. He served 13 years total and was discharged as a SSG E-6. He served as Battalion Motor Sargent for HQ Battery

Mr. Osswald was a Meat Manager at Stop and Shop in Wareham where he worked for over 40 years before retiring in 2012. He had also worked at Peoples Market in New Bedford, Angelo’s Market and Purity Supermarket both in Wareham.

He was a member of the Onset Fire Department for 38 years.

He enjoyed summer barbeques with his family and being the grill master. He enjoyed going for rides, spending time with his family and distributing food baskets to those in need. He was a member of the Box 5 Association.

Survivors include his wife, Theresa A. (Bumpus) Osswald; three sons, Derek Osswald and his fiancé, Jennifer West of South Portland, Maine, Jeffrey Osswald of Onset and Kevin Osswald and his girlfriend Heather Elwood of West Wareham; a daughter, Sharon Zine and her husband Rich of Onset; three brothers, Thomas Osswald and his wife Pam of Dartmouth, Richard Osswald of Dartmouth, Michael Osswald and his wife Betty Jane of New Bedford; two sisters, Margaret MacFarland of Wilton, Maine and Elizabeth Levinson of Dartmouth; 12 grandchildren, Derek Osswald Jr. and his girlfriend, Alexis of Taunton, Chantell MacLeod and her fiancé Cole of Onset, Dominique Osswald of Taunton, Ashley Zine and her boyfriend, Rich, Brandon Zine and Cassidy Sousa all of Onset, Dylan West of South Portland, Maine, Jessica Osswald of North Falmouth, Baylee Osswald of Wareham, Richelle Zine of Onset, Tanner Cannon and Ashton Elwood of Wareham; two great grandchildren, Aubree Pike and Mila Pike both of Onset; his extended family, Chris DaLuz of Pawtucket, Rhode Island and Jeanine Gibson of Mansfield. He was the brother-in-law of the late Robert MacFarland.

Visiting hours are from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 6 in the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway, Wareham. Burial will be private.
