Robotics team takes top spot at regional competition

Wareham Middle School robotics team the Undersea Pirates took top honors at the New England Regional MATE ROV Competition at UMass Dartmouth on Saturday, May 3.

The team was one of four representing the school's Junior Engineering Club, which consists of 22 students in grades five through eight.

The competition consisted of designing, building, and electrically wiring an underwater robot to perform very specific underwater retrieval and maneuvering missions. The students also created posters that described the design team, their "company," and the mission while adhering to very specific criteria.

The Undersea Pirates, which took home The the "First Place Overall" prize, consist of students Jonathan McCarthy, Ethan Osley, Nicholas Dix, Michael Ledoux, and Vyper Latullipe. All the WMS teams were led by Sue Taber and Beth Guiffrida and assisted by Julie Walker. The team has qualified to advance to the next level in the competition.
