Russell unsuccessful in write-in campaign, 9% of Wareham voters cast ballots in state primary

Sep 10, 2012

Just 9%, or 1,425 of Wareham's 14,587 registered voters, filled out ballots in Thursday's state primary election.

Town Clerk Mary Ann Silva said the low percentage is about average for Wareham.

"Primaries have never been very popular since I've been Town Clerk," she said.

On the Democratic ballot, current U.S. Congressman Bill Keating received 59% of the votes for the Ninth District seat in Congress over Bristol District Attorney Samuel Sutter. Keating also got the nod from Wareham voters, garnering 693 votes to Sutter's 182.

Statewide, the Republican race for a candidate for the Ninth District seat in Congress was a close one. Christopher Sheldon squeaked by Adam Chaprales. Wareham voters picked Sheldon over Chaprales, 340-118 votes.

The Democratic Party's only other contested race in this area -- First District Councillor -- was a close one in Wareham and statewide. Town Clerk Mary Ann Silva confirmed on Wednesday that a recount will be conducted in Wareham, and is scheduled for Thursday afternoon. In Wareham, a total of 288 voters chose Walter Moniz, while 281 gave a nod to Oliver Cipollini, and 203 chose Nicholas Bernier.

Wareham Democrat Ervin "Tootsie" Russell ran a write-in campaign for the Second Plymouth District State Representative seat, but was unsuccessful in garnering the 150 votes needed to have his name placed on the November ballot.

The Democratic Party had no candidate for the position, so State Rep. Susan Williams Gifford (R-Wareham) will be uncontested on the ballot. In the primary, Gifford received 464 votes in Wareham.

Russell received 87 write-in votes in Wareham, according to the Town Clerk's office.

In Carver, the Town Clerk's office confirmed that Russell received five votes. Middleborough tallied a total of six write-in votes. Wareham Week could not confirm how many of those were Russell's.

Wondering how Wareham voters felt about the candidates in the uncontested primary races? Here are the numbers.

  • Elizabeth A. Warren, the single candidate on the Democratic ballot for Senator in Congress, garnered 781 votes. On the Republican ballot, current U.S. Senator Scott P. Brown garnered 511 votes.
  • Charles Cipollini, who ran uncontested on the Republican ballot for First District Councillor, garnered 409 votes.
  • Current State Senator Marc R. Pacheco garnered 762 votes on the Democratic primary ballot. There were no Republican candidates for First Plymouth & Bristol District Senator.
  • Democratic candidate Robert S. Creedon received 710 votes for Plymouth County Clerk of Courts. The Republican ballot had no candidates for that office.
  • On the Democratic ballot, John Buckley, current Plymouth District Register of Deeds, received 733 votes. Republican candidate Anthony T. O'Brien received 424 votes.
  • Democratic Plymouth County Commissioner candidate Greg Hanley received 680 votes in Wareham. Republican candidate Daniel Pallotta received 415 votes.
