Santa comes to Onset for Christmas in the Parks

Dec 8, 2018

Santa Claus traded in his sleigh for a firetruck on Dec. 8 to spread some early holiday cheer at one of Onset’s longest running traditions.

Hosted by the Onset Bay Association, Christmas in the Parks has a history dating back more than 20 years according to Executive Director Kat Jones. The free event provides holiday activities, snacks and gifts for children of all ages to enjoy thanks to contributions from local businesses.

“It’s a really magical time of year,” said Jones. “It always makes me happy to see our residents and businesses coming together to celebrate.”

A special donation from Cummings Properties made the day even more special with a $1,000 gift awarded to both the Onset Bay Association and the Gleason Family YMCA.

Jones said half of the money received would help to sponsor Christmas in the Parks with the remainder going toward Illumination Night in the summer.

Horse drawn carriage rides leaving from Onset pier took families attending Christmas in the Parks on a scenic tour of the village while Santa met with dozens of eager children at the Onset Fire Station.

Over at Sumo Fesco, business owner Larry Senna offered activities such cookie decorating and face painting. He also provided kids with a place to write their letters to Santa.

Across the street, Tracy Knowles of Sinner & Saints Tattoos, and Lexie Desmarais of Dog Days Coffee, handed out goodie bags of candy.

“It’s cold,” Knowles said. “But coming out each year is totally worth it.”
