Scallop Fest sets record

Sep 26, 2010

A record number of dinners were sold at the 41st Annual Bourne Scallop Fest last weekend, prompting organizers to bring in more scallops - in addition to the 6,000 pounds ordered - so that there would be enough for attendees to enjoy until the end of the festivities.

More than 55,000 people attended the festival, which was held Friday through Sunday.

Saturday's festival attendance was "up substantially" over last year, said Marie Oliva, president and CEO of the Cape Cod Canal Region Champer of Commerce, which puts on the event.

The festival proceeds support the Chamber's scholarship fund for area schools, and contributes to operating expenses of the Buzzards Bay and Sagamore visitor centers.

Two large tents housed food, entertainment, and a craft show featuring more than 100 crafters. A midway featured family-friendly rides and games.

Entertainment went on all day, each day of the festival, with Martha's Vineyard band Entrain rocking the entertainment tent on Saturday evening. Agua Clara, which performed South American-style music, performed outside throughout the weekend.

And, of course, eight-foot-tall robot "Tobor," a six-year staple of the festival, wandered around the midway during the day, greeting, shaking hands, and hugging festival-goers.
