School Committee approves two international trips for students

The School Committee approved two international trips for students at its meeting Wednesday night. Representatives for a student trip to the Central American nation of Belize as well as a senior trip on a caribbean cruise line came before the committee.

Wareham High School science teachers Craig Berriault and Joy Higgins presented their plan for an educational and culturally immersive February 2016 trip to Belize open to incoming 9th through 12th-graders.

The trip will afford students the opportunity to see rain forests, caves, Mayan ruins and the second largest coral reef in the world, among other things.

"They give you a little bit of everything," Higgins said.

The trip is estimated to cost $2,500 depending on flight prices and how many students are involved.

"Anytime our kids can get a chance like this it's absolutely worthwhile," said School Committee Chair Cliff Sylvia.

The committee also met with representatives for the Senior Class of 2016 class trip.

Trip Coordinator Marjory Rakoski described the trip, a five-day, four-night cruise out of Port Canaveral, Florida with stops in the Bahamas, to committee members. Rakoski said she found the trip through a travel agent that coordinates senior class trips.

She said the 50 students have shown interest in the trip and the cost is approximately $950 per senior, $100 more than last year's senior trip to Universal Studios in Florida. Rakoski said there are a number of fundraising opportunities for students, who have already raised more than $3,000 toward the trip.

"Of all the senior trips this could be the one I feel least comfortable with," Sylvia said.

But his reservations were quelled by High School Principal Scott Palladino, who said he has confidence in both the trip coordinators and the company that runs the trips.

"The security on these programs is top notch," Palladino said. "I'm very confident in the program but even more confident in the two folks sitting here [Rakoski and Class Advisor Carolyn Gomes-Viera]."
