School Committee looks for help with new strategic plan
The School Committee doesn’t want to see a repeat performance when it comes to implementing a new strategic plan for Wareham Public Schools.
Committee members said the last Strategic Plan did not work. Superintendent Dr. Kimberly-Shaver Hood said she’s looking for participation from all groups—including students, teachers, parents, faculty, town officials and more—on what should be included in a new plan.
The plan lays out over-arching goals and educational philosophies for the schools and is used as the basis for an operational plan to achieve these goals.
“It is coming and we do ask and look for your involvement,” said Shaver-Hood.
Committee Chair Cliff Sylvia and member Rhonda Veugen both said it wasn’t necessarily the plan, which ran from 2009 to 2013, but rather the execution of it that led to its ultimate ineffectiveness.
“The strategic plan never got completed,” said Sylvia, saying that actions associated with the goals laid out in the plan never came to fruition. “Developing actions plans with smart goals is part of the entire process. I felt the process was not competed. It didn’t go far enough.”
Veugen said she had done some research regarding other districts’ strategic plans, and said a new plan could be used as a tool to bring the community together.
“It’s a good process if you do it from start to finish,” added Sylvia. “I don’t feel that there was a will to get it done.”
Sylvia said they’d be actively looking for volunteers to help put together the new strategic plan.
“I’ll try to get some good folks to facilitate it,” he said.
