School Committee puts hold on creating 'garage assistant' position

Oct 13, 2011

The School Committee on Wednesday, October 12, delayed a vote on a Transportation Department request to add a full-time "garage assistant" to the staff.

Wareham Public Schools Transportation Manager Jeff Tatro said the position would mainly involve running errands, but that the district would look for the person to serve as a substitute driver and do light mechanical work.

Tatro must get the position approved by the School Committee before he can hire a person for the job.

Committee member Kenneth Fontes was skeptical of the request.

“It seems like a lot of compensation to just run errands," he said.

Tatro did not have the amount of the salary for the proposed position at Wednesday's meeting.

School Committee member Rhonda Veugen agreed with Fontes.

"I think we’re sending the wrong message," she said. "I don’t think I can support this.”

Superintendent Dr. Barry Rabinovitch told the committee that someone is currently doing the job on an as-needed basis.

"I think the committee needs to see the dollars and cents,” he said, noting that the numbers will show that creating the new position would be cost-neutral.

The committee decided to take up the issue at a later date, at which point Tatro will have a more complete analysis of the position for the School Committee.

Earlier in the meeting, the School Committee awarded citations to seven second-graders from the John W. Decas Elementary School in recognition of their entries in the Massachusetts School Building Authority’s “My Ideal School” contest.

The students were asked to draw posters showing what the ideal school would look like for them. School Committee Chair Geoff Swett presented the students with their poster in a frame.
