School Committee recognizes DECA students
The School Committee recognized Wednesday night the 24 Wareham High School Distributive Education Clubs of America students who attended the international DECA conference in Florida in late April.
The students, in full business attire, each told the committee members what they learned at the conference, and what DECA personally means to them.
“It’s hard to explain what DECA is when it’s your life,” senior Rebecca Blanchette said. “We wouldn’t be the kids who we are today, sitting in front of you. I know, maybe, two of us would be here, and that’s not me.”
Blanchette said though she is on a pre-veterinary medicine track, she will be pursuing a minor in marketing.
Junior Erica Trask, who was a second-year attendee of the international conference, said DECA is what she is passionate about, and will influence what she does in college.
“DECA helps me have social skills, helps me problem solve … and helps me know what I want in life,” Trask told the committee.
Committee member Cliff Sylvia said he thinks the DECA students demonstrate Wareham Public Schools’ level of accomplishment.
“I wish that every naysayer in Wareham could have seen this presentation,” Sylvia said. “I am so tired of hearing, ‘It’s better down the road.’”
Among the students recognized were junior Paige Fehskens, who ranked top 20 in the world in her category, as well as senior Cory Harunkiewicz, who was presented with a scholarship from the United States Army to attend Norwich University to become an officer.
