School district advocates for safety during National School Bus Safety Week

The Wareham Public School District is advocating for safety awareness during National School Bus Safety Week, held from October 17-21.

This year’s theme, “Be Aware - Know the Danger Zone!” highlights the importance of keeping children safe outside of the school bus, especially when they are boarding or exiting.

School officials say they're using the week to remind students and motorists of important school bus safety tips. Studies have proven that the most dangerous part of the school bus ride for children is when they get on and off the bus, according to officials.

Students are asked to stay out of the “Danger Zone” by keeping 10 "giant steps" away from the bus at all times, to cross in front of the bus and always remain in sight of the driver, and to be alert around school buses - don't text, talk on cell phones, or listen to MP3 players.

Motorists are reminded that they are required to stop for a school bus with its "stop arm" extended and lights flashing and are asked to use extra caution when driving near school buses or in a school zone.

"We would like to remind everyone that it is important for parents, students and motorists to practice school bus safety," officials wrote in a statement. "Safety is the core value at Wareham Public Schools. National School Bus Safety Week is just one more way we can advocate for everyone to use extra caution around school buses."
