School resource officer to return to Wareham's schools
Students at Wareham schools will have their police officer back for the upcoming school year.
Officer Karl Baptiste, the longtime school resource officer, was removed from the schools in February as part of a broader budget-cutting effort in the Police Department and town.
At Tuesday’s School Committee meeting, Superintendent Dr. Kimberly Shaver-Hood announced that a school resource officer would be back in the schools for the upcoming school year, which starts Sept. 2. Shaver-Hood whether Baptiste returns is the decision of Interim Police Chief Kevin Walsh and Town Administrator Derek Sullivan.
The Superintendent said that Walsh, Sullivan and others had worked together to restore the position.
“We certainly appreciate everyone’s hard work and help with this upcoming event,” said Shaver-Hood.
In February, residents voiced concern when the position was cut. A temporary “security resource position” was created and filled, though it was a non-police position.
The school resource officer previously served every public school in Wareham, providing crime prevention and security services. Shaver-Hood said the officer would perform similar duties.
Shaver-Hood said that she could not say where the funds to pay for the school resource officer had been found. As in the past, the School Department will not pay for the officer. Neither Walsh nor Sullivan could immediately be reached for comment.
