Parents of elementary- or middle-school-age children may want to give Main Street a stop as they stock up for the upcoming school year.

The Town of Wareham, along with participating businesses, is holding its second annual back-to-school stroll on Saturday, Aug. 24 from 2 to 5 p.m.

Students can pick up free supplies for elementary and middle school such as pens, pencils, notebooks, erasers and more.

Families who wish to participate can start at the old train station on Merchant’s Way, where they will be given a tote bag and a list of participating locations.

Select Board member Jared Chadwick, who has helped organize the event, said the idea came from Town Administrator Derek Sullivan.

“It’s a two-for-one,” Chadwick said. “We’re helping out the businesses, they’re helping us out and they’re helping out kids.”

The idea was to have the event come back bigger and better this year than last, said Chadwick. The town has expanded participation so that all Main Street businesses, as well as businesses from anywhere in Wareham, can participate.

Chadwick said the focus on Main Street helps highlight the town’s “mom-and-pop” businesses, which are the ones that most often give back to kids and the community.

And as kids and their families make their way down Main Street, “they’re getting all the school supplies and everything they need,” he said.
