A 53-year-old man riding a mobility scooter was flown to a Boston-area hospital after a Cranberry Highway accident involving three cars on Friday, April 6.

The accident happened at approximately 5:15 p.m. when a male driver of a pick-up truck saw the man operating the scooter -- whom he recognized as a friend -- in the area of Water Wizz in East Wareham, according to a Wareham Police statement.

The pick-up truck driver, identified as Robert Fielding of Wareham, thought he saw the scooter tip over and quickly made a left turn into the Water Wizz parking lot, according to police.

While it was turning, the pick-up truck was struck by another vehicle, causing the truck to collide with the scooter, police said.

The man operating the scooter, identified as Michael Thomas of Cranberry Highway, sustained leg injuries and was transported to Tobey Hospital and later med-flighted to a Boston-area hospital, according to police. Police said his injuries did not appear to be life threatening. His condition could not immediately be confirmed.

“I know I saw him fall off the scooter and I went down and turned around and came back," Fielding explained in an interview, adding that he is upset about the accident. “I was trying to help him."

Police cited Fielding for failure to yield the right-of-way, said Wareham Police Lieutenant Kevin Walsh.

“I really feel bad about Mike," Fielding added. “I didn't even get a chance to talk to him. It happened so fast.”

Two vehicles were towed from the scene with extensive damage, according to police. A third vehicle was also involved, but sustained minor damage.
