Select Board advances roundabout for Onset Avenue intersection

Jan 23, 2024

Five options have been whittled down to one for an intersection outside Onset Village where four roads meet — Onset Avenue, Minot Avenue. Great Neck Road and Depot Street. The Select Board voted in favor of a roundabout at that intersection during a meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 23.

The intersection has been targeted for reconstruction due to its unusual shape and its higher-than-average crash level.

Consultants from the firm Kimley-Horn presented the five options at a public meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 30. At the time, two of those options (named 1B and 4) received support from residents of the town who participated.

Option 1B would turn the intersection into something resembling a typical, four-way intersection, with the center of the intersection placed on the eastern leg of the Great Neck Road-Depot Street route, and it would place a one-way bypass lane for travelers coming from Onset Avenue from the south to Depot Street to the north. Option 4 keeps the bypass lane and installs a roundabout centered on the Great Neck Road-Depot Street route.

The roundabout option will have a higher construction cost and impact surrounding properties more, but it will have lower maintenance costs and will be more of a long term solution, said Kimley-Horn consultant Bill Scully.

Members of the Select Board split on which option they preferred, ultimately voting 2-1 in favor of the roundabout.

Select Board member Alan Slavin and Chair Judith Whiteside expressed support for the roundabout. Option 4 is the "best possible solution," said Slavin. "Yes, it's more expensive, but again, if you want to do it once, do it right."

Select Board member Jared Chadwick expressed support for Option 1B, due to the effect the roundabout has on the fire station at that intersection. The extra space taken up by the roundabout would restrict the space available at Wareham Fire Station 4, possibly causing an issue for trying to park larger fire trucks at that station.
