Select Board re-vote leads to sewer recommendation tie
The Select Board has voted for a third time on a motion to recommend $36 million in sewer repairs at Town Meeting. This time, the vote ended in a tie, with two members voting for the motion, two members voting against and one abstaining.
The first vote, held before the Special Town Meeting in the summer, resulted in the Select Board voting against the motion. Members Alan Slavin, Jared Chadwick and Ron Besse voted "no", and members Judith Whiteside and Tricia Wurts voted "yes".
The second vote, held Tuesday, Oct. 10, resulted in the Select Board voting for the motion. Slavin changed his vote from "no" to "abstain," and Chadwick was not present, leading to two votes in favor, one vote against and one abstention.
The Select Board held a repeat of its Oct. 10 vote the following Tuesday, Oct. 17, as Chadwick was present at that following meeting. He repeated his "no" vote from the summer, leading to two votes in favor, two votes against and one abstention.
Whiteside said the motion will read "favorable action, 2-2-1," due to the Select Board's rules around Town Meeting recommendations. The Select Board always needs to make a motion for favorable recommendation, then to vote whether or not to accept that motion.
When asked whether the motion passed or failed, Whiteside said, "Technically, no, it did not pass or fail."
