Selectman looking for volunteers to clean up town
Selectmen Alan Slavin is calling on members of the community to help make Wareham become a "no litter town."
At last week's Selectmen meeting, Slavin said he is looking for advocates in different areas of town to come forward to the Selectmen's office and coordinate trash pickups.
"We want someone from Onset, from West Wareham, from Tihonet, all the different areas of town," Slavin said, to form neighborhood groups to make sure their streets are clean.
Slavin said this was a follow-up to the presentation given last month by a member of the non-profit group Keep America Beautiful. Mansfield native Neil Rhein gave a presentation to Selectmen in July which included details on how Wareham could join that organization's "No Litter" campaign.
Rhein said the organization focuses on litter prevention, cleanup, beautification and waste reduction, while also providing training and networking opportunities. He said the group cleanups are generally "great community events . . . that bring everyone together."
Rhein said the towns that join the program "benefit financially through the cumulative volunteer hours," which lessens the burden on municipal maintenance workers to field trash cleanup complaints.
"We're looking for people who actually want to help," said Slavin. "We have limited funds and resources. This is the first of many steps to try and get the citizens to step up for the town and help us out."
