Selectman Steve Holmes will not seek re-election

Feb 14, 2016

Selectman Steve Holmes will not be seeking re-election to his spot on the Board of Selectmen this coming April.

Holmes cited personal stressors, such as health issues and a new business to run, as his reasons for not running again.

“This decision was not made lightly and it was a very difficult decision to make but in the end my family and health issues are a priority and the time requirement for performing the privilege of being a Selectman is just not available,” Holmes said.

Holmes said he will “miss the job and the fine people I have had the pleasure of working with.”

“Many of them truly care and are working as hard as they can to make Wareham a better place to live, enjoy, and conduct business,” Holmes said. “It’s not perfect but these folks will continue to try to make it better.”

Holmes’ seat is not the only one up for grabs. Board of Selectmen Chair Patrick Tropeano’s seat is also open. Tropeano is seeking re-election, but there are several contenders for his and Holmes’ spot. As of Thursday afternoon, Tropeano and challengers John Ferranti, Michael Frates and Anthony Scarsciotti had taken out nomination papers. Of those, Ferranti and Frates had returned papers on Jan. 19 and Feb. 1, respectively.

Elections will take place on April 5.
