Selectmen back Latham Centers plan to build group home
A nonprofit dedicated to helping people with a rare genetic disorder has the Selectmen’s blessing to build a new group home on Great Neck Road.
On Tuesday, board members swiftly approved a letter supporting the Latham Centers, Inc.'s plan to build a single-family home at 165 Great Neck Road for those diagnosed with Prader-Willi syndrome.
Latham Centers offer treatment and support to those suffering from the syndrome and operates group homes on Cape Cod and the South Coast. The Brewster-based organization already has one home on Peter Cooper Drive that houses five people with the disorder. The disease is a potentially life-threatening genetic disorder that affects between 1 in 10,000 and 1 in 30,000 people.
Representatives from Latham Centers appeared before Selectmen in February seeking support for the new house. At the time, Selectmen Patrick Tropeano expressed reservations about backing the plan until he visited the Peter Cooper Drive facility. Tropeano said he wanted to see if the new home would be a detriment to the neighborhood.
After visiting, Tropeano said he was impressed with the operation and had no doubts about the new home.
“I went out there and I believe there will be no impact on the neighborhood,” said Tropeano.
