Selectmen call for review of recent sewer abatement request

Jun 24, 2015

Selectmen unanimously voted Tuesday to send a letter to the Board of Sewer Commissioners, asking them to reconsider one of their recent decisions on a sewer abatement.

Selectman Patrick Tropeano said that resident Marie Ferris, of 10 Stephens Ave., had applied for a sewer abatement on April 1 and was denied by the sewer commissioners at their May 28 meeting.

According to Ferris, she lives in a single family home but was being charged at the sewer rate of a duplex. Tropeano said that after checking with the town assessor and the building inspector, she indeed was living in a single family home.

Ferris, however, arrived at the May 28 sewer commissioners meeting after the board had voted on the abatement and gave her no explanation to their reasoning.

Currently, Wareham sewer users pay a flat annual $596 per EDU (equivalent dwelling units). A single-family home is charged one EDU, while a two-unit duplex is generally charged two EDUs. Businesses are scheduled similarly. For example, restaurants are charged one EDU per 12 seats; gas stations are charged one EDU per service island.

Selectmen voted to send a letter to the sewer commissioners to recommend a review of their decision.
