Selectmen give up right of first refusal to purchase Bay Pointe, discuss plans for Westfield
The Board of Selectmen Tuesday voted to waive the town's right of first refusal to purchase the Bay Pointe Country Club.
Selectmen Walter Cruz, Ellen Begley and Michael Schneider voted in favor of waiving the right, while Selectman Steve Holmes voted against it. Selectman Cara Winslow did not vote.
"I don't believe we've been given enough information," Winslow said.
The Selectmen's vote comes after the country club was not discussed at Town Meeting. Town Meeting voters were expected to discuss whether the town should purchase the bank-owned country club in Onset for $1.4 million. However, the issue was not discussed or voted on when a quorum count revealed the meeting was one voter shy of the 150 needed to vote on financial matters greater than $5,000.
The Board of Selectmen also voted unanimously Tuesday not to extend the November 10 deadline for the town to accept proposals from developers for the Westfield senior housing project.
Peter Sanborn, acting director of the Community and Economic Development Authority, suggested the deadline be extended to the end of January or beginning of February of next year, since the town has received few bites.
The Board of Selectmen made plans to meet with the Westfield RFP Committee on November 15 to determine how to proceed. The committee was formed early this year and charged with making suggestions to the Selectmen for a request for proposal, or RFP, for the construction of the housing project.
The project was put out to bid in August and bidding was expected to close in early September, however because there was little interest from developers, Town Administrator Mark Andrews recommended the board to extend the deadline to November 10.
The current economic climate is the suspected cause for the lack of interest in the project, Sanborn said.
Selectman Michael Schneider argued that the project is still viable and is was something "worth fighting for."
Holmes voiced similiar sentiments.
"It is this board's responsibility to move this forward," he said. "The decisions that are made rest on the five of us."
